What are PanOptix lenses?

Intraocular lenses (IOLs) can replace natural lenses removed in cataract surgery. PanOptix is a highly-advanced intraocular lens that corrects vision for near, intermediate, and far distances, all without glasses or contacts. PanOptix lenses are used after cataracts are removed as part of cataract correction surgery. It is a trifocal IOL designed to produce full vision correction for clear eyesight, near and far.

Who is a good candidate for PanOptix lenses?

If you need cataract surgery, you may be a good candidate for PanOptix trifocal lenses. Only a thorough examination by a skilled eye surgeon can determine whether these intraocular lenses are the right option for you. Our Beverly Hills ophthalmologist will take several factors into account, including:

  • The shape of your eyes
  • Your general health
  • How much time you spend in front of a computer
  • How limited you feel by wearing glasses
  • Other lifestyle needs

What should I expect with a PanOptix lens placement procedure?

Your cataract surgery is an outpatient procedure performed with local anesthesia and intravenous sedation. The procedure takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes, but you will be at our facility for a few hours. During surgery, you can expect to feel only slight pressure and no discomfort. The surgeon makes a tiny incision with a femtosecond laser, then uses an ultrasonic instrument to emulsify your natural lens. The lens material is aspirated out of the eye through a tiny incision. Then the surgeon implants the PanOptix trifocal lens.

What is recovery like after cataract surgery with PanOptix lenses?

Although some people have improved vision immediately after the procedure, it is reasonable to expect to have blurred vision for a few days. You may experience some discomfort, which should subside in a day or two after surgery. There are very few restrictions during your recovery, except to avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for one week, or as instructed by your doctor.

FAQ

What are the benefits of PanOptix lenses?

PanOptix lenses are new-generation, trifocal IOLs that correct vision at all three distances – near, intermediate, and far. They contain ultraviolet blue light filtering material to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays. They can provide sharper close and mid-distance vision without sacrificing distance vision, and make reading, driving, and other activities comfortable.

Do PanOptix lenses reduce the need for glasses?

Yes, as stated by the FDA, PanOptix lenses can minimize the effects of presbyopia (inability to focus on close images) by providing clear near vision and improved intermediate vision, while maintaining comparable clear distance vision, with a reduced need for eyeglasses. In clinical studies reported by the FDA, clear vision in one eye implanted with the PanOptix lens as compared to a control group was:

  • Far – 20/20 for both the PanOptix group and the control group
  • Intermediate – 20/25 with PanOptix as compared to 20/40 for the control group
  • Near – 20/25 with PanOptix as compared to 20/63 for the control group
