The Xen Gel Stent is an innovative medical device designed to help treat open-angle glaucoma that has not responded to medication or previous treatments, or “refractory glaucoma.” The stent is a tiny tube about the length of an eyelash that provides direct access from the surface of your eye to the reservoir, thereby alleviating intraocular pressure. Successful insertion of the Xen Gel Stent allows patients to reduce or even stop using eye drops due to significantly increased fluid flow.

Who should get the Xen Gel Stent?

The Xen Gel Stent is ideal for those who suffer from open-angle glaucoma that has not responded sufficiently to medication or previous surgical treatment. It can also be used for patients with:

  • Primary open-angle glaucoma
  • Pseudoexfoliative glaucoma
  • Pigmentary glaucoma

If you think you may be a candidate for this innovative treatment, our ophthalmologists at Beverly Hills Institute of Ophthalmology will perform a comprehensive evaluation and see if it is the right option for you.

What to expect with the Xen Gel Stent?

The procedure usually takes one to two hours to complete, and the recovery time is minimal. Most patients are back to their usual routines within the first seven days after the procedure.

This minimally invasive procedure involves several steps:

  • Anesthesia: Your doctor will first apply either topical or local anesthesia for comfort and safety, so you will not feel anything during the procedure.
  • Incision: An incision will then be made on the surface of the eye to allow access to the drainage area.
  • Insertion: An injector pre-loaded with the Xen Gel Stent is then used to carefully insert the stent into the right location.

The benefits of the Xen Gel Stent

The Xen Gel Stent is often considered to be a hybrid between traditional glaucoma surgeries and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS). The unique gel-based stent becomes flexible once inserted into your eye and is not made from silicone – thereby reducing the risk of inflammation and rejection. Some of the key benefits associated with the Xen Gel Stent include:

  • Quick, low-risk procedure with a rapid recovery time
  • Effective reduction of the intraocular pressure associated with glaucoma
  • FDA-approved to treat glaucoma that has not sufficiently responded to medication or previous surgeries
