What is LASEK?

LASEK in Beverly Hills is a form of refractive eye surgery that permanently reshapes the cornea and produces similar results to LASIK. It is an alternative procedure in which the surgeon creates a thinner flap, moves the flap aside, performs necessary corrections, and repositions the cornea. LASEK is performed to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

Who is a good candidate for LASEK?

If you need corrective eye surgery and your corneas are thin, you may be a good candidate for LASEK. The LASEK technique does not require as much tissue as LASIK. This procedure may also be optimal for significant nearsightedness (myopia), which requires more of the central cornea to be removed and reshaped.

What should I expect with LASEK?

LASEK corrective eye surgery is performed on an outpatient basis and takes approximately 15 minutes per eye. You are awake during the procedure. Numbing anesthetic drops are applied to the eye. The surgeon makes a circular cut in the thin outer layer of the cornea, leaving a small, arc-shaped area of the circle uncut to create a flap. The flap is moved to the side, and a laser is used to reshape the cornea. Then the flap is repositioned on the eye, and a special contact lens is placed over the eye to act as a protective bandage.

What is the recovery like after LASEK surgery?

You can return home following your surgery. The "bandage" contact lens must remain in place for approximately four days. You may experience mild to moderate discomfort in the first few days after LASEK. Your doctor will prescribe medications to prevent infection and speed healing. Recovery can take up to a week. FAQ

What results can I expect with LASEK?

LASEK and LASIK surgeries produce similar outcomes. Most patients achieve 20/20 vision. Nearly all achieve 20/40 or better.

How long does it take for the LASEK flap to heal?

The outer layer of the cornea where the flap is created in LASEK surgery will typically regenerate within three to five days. A unique medicated contact lens remains in place as a bandage to protect the eye during the healing process.

What are the advantages of LASEK?

Pros of LASEK surgery include the following:

  • The technique may be appropriate for eyes with thinner corneas
  • No risk of corneal flap complications or removal of too much outer cornea
  • Dry eyes are less common
  • 20/40 vision or better after surgery

How does LASEK differ from LASIK?

In LASIK surgery, a laser is used to create surface ablations on the cornea instead of creating a flap. With LASEK, the top layer of the cornea is mostly removed and then repositioned after the cornea is ablated with a laser.
